Message from the Board - May 2012

Melinda Kolker

May brings a lot of changes for me. As a child, it brought the end of the school year, Mother’s Day, my Mom’s birthday and – one week later – my birthday. Later, it brought graduations and moves.

May 2003 was when I first saw a photo of the baby that was going to be my son. I put a copy of that photo on a key chain and carried it with me every day until we brought him home.

Later that year, Canon released the first digital SLR for consumers. I decided to learn how to become a better photographer so I could use that SLR to “save money” on professional portraits. I took classes, read books, watched tutorials, and practiced like crazy. My son has to be one of the most photographed kids on the planet. I have no idea what the shutter count on that camera might be, but I bet it is close to the same as my current camera. I bought Lightroom to help me keep track of the massive number of images I was capturing. I had so many images that Photoshop Elements kept crashing.

I learned so much with that camera and have learned so much more since I’ve been involved in PPA and AZPPA. I encourage you to keep an eye out for inspiration. Find an image or another source of inspiration and keep it close to you. If your business slows during the summer, spend that time learning a new skill or planning your marketing efforts.

Attend a Super Monday class or one of the AZPPA workshops or meetings to get ideas. Wherever you get your inspiration… Hold it close… Make it tangible… Make it happen. Make May be the month that it all started for you.
